A Little Bit of Heaven – The Filoli Gardens
Hello! Filoli is a lavish country house set on 16 acres of formal gardens, which are surrounded by 654 rolling acres. The grounds are…
…exquisite without being fussy and the gardens lend a measure of privacy and surprise. Come along and take a look!
Located just 24 miles from San Francisco, it is now the Property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is lovingly kept up by over 1,000 volunteers. That number highlights what a jewel Filoli is to the community.
William Bourn, who built the house and gardens named it by combining the first two letters from the key words of his credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man: Live a good life.” Still sounds pretty good today!
Gardens are planted in everything from exotic Chinese peonies and European hornbeam trees to sturdy geraniums and old-fashioned roses.
Enchanting store at Filoli is the ideal place to pick up the perfect Mother’s Day gift. Please remember dear “young” Mom on Mother’s Day!
Something I just learned is that Filoli is that it has had numerous cameos in many movies – Heaven can Wait, The Joy Luck Club and Wedding Planner among them.
A footnote to popular culture, in the 1980’s as the credits rolled for Dynasty, the prime-time weekly soap opera, an aerial view of Filoli ran, to represent the over-the-top Carrington family ancestral home. I thought this couple was very cute walking together through the grounds.
