A Handbag By Any Other Name!
My daughter Mallory and I have talked about starting our own handbag line, especially after learning the cost of the newest “it” bag that we are craving. However, when we finally get around to considering all that goes into manufacturing, marketing and selling handbags our plans are quickly shelved.
So my hat goes off to Alexandra DeClaris, a delightful friend of Mallory’s in NYC, who has managed to do all of this and more with her handbags bearing her name. I think she has enormous talent in selecting a kaleidoscope of rich colors and exotic skins to complement her classic designs, all at a reasonable price.
Come meet the beautiful and talented woman who creates the most sought after handbags, on and off the red carpet.
Q: What was your motivation for starting your handbag line?
A: I saw a python handbag in a store in London that I thought it was the most exquisite piece I had ever seen! The price tag was completely out of my league, so I decided to source skins overseas, send a manufacturer my design, and create a bag for myself. Once my friends saw the bag, they had me order bags for them.
Q: How did you go about learning about the business?
A: I really have taught myself everything I know. It has been a process of up and downs, and I have definitely learned some tough lessons! I am still learning which is an exciting experience!
Q: Any piece of advice for someone wanting to design and manufacture bags?
A: I would tell them that it’s always hard to get going, but if you have the creativity and the passion it is amazing to have a vision and bring it to life. Sometimes, it’s not always what you anticipated, but that leaves room for growth and the possibility of something even better!
Q: What can we see in your newest collection?
A: The newest collection is by far my favorite! The python and stingray colors are more vibrant and unique. I do not love labels and logos. To me, an exotic skin handbag in a beautiful color is the only kind of handbag worth wearing. Color is key to me and I love to use colors that are timeless and stunning.
Q: Describe the type of woman you are designing for?
A: The woman I design for is someone that is confident, classic, and one of a kind. That is how I want every woman to feel when they are holding an Alexandra DeClaris handbag.
Q: Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?
A: I would definitely have to say Alaia. Alaia would be the one designer I would wear for the rest of my life!
Q: You divide your time between London and New York. What are some of your favorite restaurants in both cities?
A: In London I love Cecconis, Zuma, and Star of India- Best Indian Food Ever!
In NYC my favorites are Sushi of Gari, Soho House, and Momofuku.
Q: Where would you like to see your business go in the next ten years?
A: I would love to have a few boutiques and branch off to clothing, shoes, and homeware.
