Foreign Cinema

Step through the metal doors at the Foreign Cinema on Mission Street and you’ll be in a world where food, art and film all brilliantly converge. I did so recently with my daughters and fellow foodies Olivia and Averell. We felt a sense of giddiness as we passed through the cavernous interior and onto the covered outside courtyard. The evening was warm, the lights were twinkling and the Maltese Falcon was about to be splashed across the silver screen.

A San Francisco Mission District restaurant for over 15 years, its inspired menu is drawn from California cuisine. With all the new and trendy restaurants springing  up around it, Foreign CinemaForeign has held it’s own featuring organic and seasonal food in a hip Northern Californian setting. Peace, Love and Cinema!

What I am wearing: dress by Self-Portrait, shoes by Valentino, and bag by Balmain.

Like mother, like daughter

Having not dined there in over a year, I felt it was my solemn duty to test the cocktails. We found that the dry Vodka Martini with a twist and the ever pleasing Cosmopolitan were definately up to par. Olivia enjoyed a fresh squeezed lemonade.

What do I see that looks good?

Ahhh! Fresh oysters from the northern coast of California…

A sight to taste and behold

The steak, which was prepared in a balsalmic vinaigrette reduction sauce and teaming with corn, mushrooms and seasonal greens, was delicious and far out performed the sesame seed fried chicken, with white bean hummus, mizuna, kishmish and ras honey.

A chocolate pot de creme and traditional creme brulee added the perfect finishing tastes to an enchanting evening.

“I couldn’t be fonder of you if you were my own son.  But, well, if you lose a son it’s possible to get another.  There’s only one Maltese Falcon.” Says screen-legend Humphrey Bogart,  playing detective Samuel Spade in John Huston’s 1941 classic film “The Maltese Falcon”.  Set in San Francisco, the opening credits run against a backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, reminding us again that there’s only one San Francisco.
