My Oh My How Time Flies
Hi there. I’ve missed you! Where does the time go? We’re officially in the last throws of summer.
Have you noticed how time seems to speed up the older you get older? I remember as a child, there were days that dragged, like a rusty muffler on the bumper of a junk car. These days it flies by, faster than I’ve ever thought possible, leaving me feeling rattled.
Recently, my three watches stopped working in quick succession. Do you think the universe is trying to tell me something? I’m still waiting for time to free up, so I can take the watches downtown to be fixed.
Until then, I walk around the house looking for my cell phone to find out what time it is and then rushing out of the house already late for an appointment. I fear I’m going to become one of my daughters, who seem to have their smart phones surgically attached to their bodies.
The other day I took our dog Lily for a walk in the Presidio, one of my happy places in San Francisco. Instead of enjoying my walk, I kept catching myself looking at my bare wrist, concerned about what time it was and whether I had enough time to get to my next appointment. So much for being present and in the moment…
Before clocks and watches were invented, man relied solely on sun, moon and stars to chart the changing times and seasons. How hard would it be for me to unplug and let go of my vigilant watch of every passing of minute and hour? It does sound awfully tempting, but doable I’m not so sure.
When it is doable is when I’m on vacation. My favorite vacations are ones that are devoid of schedules, time restraints and accountability. It’s so rejuvenating to just be.
Here’s to everyone enjoying the final weeks of summer – slow and easy. It’s nice to chat with you.
