Santa Barbara, Tacos and Julia Child
Julia Child’s favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara, where she lived late in life, was La Super Rica Taqueria, a down and dirty taco joint. The reigning goddess of French cuisine openly shared her love of dining there in interviews with Bon Appetit, Good Morning America, which inspired an article in The New Yorker.
I just ate up this little tit bit of Santa Barbara lore, savoring the wack factor: a tall patrician New England-ish lady, who introduced us all to coq au vin, and escargots touting a no frills taco joint as her favorite Santa Barbara dining spot.
The irony was irresistibly delicious! So when my niece Julia asked to check it out I jumped at the opportunity. Like always a line of people snaked around the block. During the wait, I had to remind myself that it was the very line upon which Julia stood.
The central dish on the menu is a pair of soft corn tortillas that can be filled with maybe eight different kinds of meat and fish, plus salsas etc. The restaurant’s menu has expanded to carry all kinds of other Mexican dishes as well.
Everything I tried was delicious and oh so fresh. The tortillas, like everything else are made by hand in front of you and are thin and fluffy. The food was delicious and worth the wait!
Next time, you’re in Santa Barbara, see and taste for yourself. Please don’t forget to let me know what you think.
