The Black Cat

Who can resist an evening at The Black Cat, a San Francisco gem, serving up live music in a bar and speakeasy venue? “Certainly not me” I thought as I sped down to the heart of the Tenderloin in the back of an Uber.

The all black exterior of the building with a neon cat sign, invites me into the chaos of the Tenderloin and the party that’s underway inside.

A combination of grit and glam, there is a high-energy bar on the main level and mellow- jazz club below. Both spaces set the tone of sophisticated congeniality.

Chatter away, people watch and befriend the busy barmen.

A diamond in the rough, I suggest that you stick to mostly slow drinks and small bar plates. The food here has had mixed reviews. A case in point, the steak I ordered was overcooked and rather bland.

The real star here is the nightly music, with an ever-changing array of performers. Be sure to check out the schedule before you go.

PURR…

The Tenderloin is still a little dicey, so it’s best to uber there. Dear Contessa, I know you would enjoy the music and the atmosphere!
