Two Birthdays and a Funeral
Last week in Santa Barbara, we feted the passing of time with two back-to-back birthdays for Averell and Olivia, and a Celebration of Life for my mother, who led and fascinating and full life and passed away at the age of 94. It was fun, exhausting and bitter sweet all rolled into one.
Averell and Olivia, though 10 years apart in age, were born a day apart. As a result, their birthdays always send me into overdrive to make each of them feel uniquely special, which they are.

Presents galore are wrapped, their favorite foods prepared and the activities of the day are planned out with precision. This results in all day celebrations ending with an evening feast of their choice.
This year for Averell’s birthday we chartered a sailboat and set sail out of the Santa Barbara harbor for a four-hour cruise. Later this week, you’ll see what incredible sights we encountered on the high seas.
Olivia chose to spend her birthday at Six Flags in Los Angeles. Despite all the moaning about the crowds and the heat, especially from little old me, we survived the death defying roller coasters. Something you don’t know about me is that I’m terrified of roller coasters and only stick to the kiddie rides.
We later learned that the metal detector screening on entering the park and the heavy presence of the LAPD, was due to the fact that the LA gangs have chosen to have turf wars at Six Flags. If I had known beforehand about this, I would certainly have put down my size 8 Jimmy Choo pumps in protest.
Anyway, one of my favorite memories of the celebrations was when Mallory and Olivia decorated our terrace for Averell’s birthday dinner.
Come see how magical they made it look.
